Modeling of the Turkish Strait System Using a High Resolution Unstructured Grid Ocean Circulation Model

The Turkish Strait System, which is the only connection between Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea, a challenging region for ocean circulation models due to topographic constraints water mass structure. We present newly developed high resolution unstructured finite element grid model simulate System using realistic atmospheric forcing lateral open boundary conditions. find that jet flowing from Bosphorus into Marmara creates an anticyclonic circulation. eddy kinetic energy field around jets exiting Strait, Dardanelles also leeward side of islands in Sea. successfully captures two-layer structure Marmara. volume transport at 120 km3/year consistent with recent observations. largest bias interface depth shallower mixed layer.
